He graduated from Jamaica High School in Sidell in 1960, where he distinguished himself as a star athlete. He continued his education and football career at Eastern Illinois University, earning a degree in business and physical education.
In the fall of 1963, Ron began his lifelong impact on young athletes when he was hired as a teacher and coach at Hampshire High School in Hampshire, Ill. There, he established the school’s football program and built it into a powerhouse. Over 21 seasons, he compiled an impressive 124–68 record, highlighted by state championships in 1976 and 1979 and a state runner-up finish in 1978. As a coach, Ron emphasized hard work, toughness, and determination-values that shaped the lives of countless players. He later coached Elgin High School to the 1984 quarterfinals and served as head coach at North Park College the following year. In addition to football, he led Hampshire’s baseball teams to numerous conference championships.
In his forties, Ron began a second successful career as a builder and contractor. Over the next 20 years, he constructed many homes throughout the Hampshire area, leaving a lasting mark on the community he loved.
In his free time, Ron enjoyed golfing-celebrating five holes-in-one over the years-and was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his children and grandchildren participate in their many activities. He and his beloved wife, Karen (Holze) Ellett, shared 39 wonderful years of marriage and cherished their snowbird lifestyle, spending more than three decades between Marengo and Phoenix, Ariz.
Ron is survived by his loving wife with whom he shared a life filled with devotion and cherished memories. He leaves behind his children, Ronald J. (Rayme) Ellett, Douglas R. (Sue) Ellett, Amy M. Dear Mama, You have always been my pillar of strength, my confidant, and my first love. Most importantly, you were the one who introduced me to Jesus. Your love for Jesus was evident in everything you did. Our bond was filled with laughter and joy. Your laugh was the most beautiful sound to my ears. When Tom came into our lives we became the three amigos, always inseparable, forming a special connection that will endure. As we continue to walk in faith with Jesus, I find peace that we will be with Jesus and you in eternity. I will always miss you deeply. Our relationship was mother and daughter the best of friends. When something was bothering the other, even if we were apart we would get that feeling that something was wrong with the other one. We were that close. I love you, Mama and you’ll always be my love.

RUTH EVELYN ROHL HERREN—There are people whose presence makes you feel at home the moment you meet them. Ruth Evelyn Herren was one of those rare people. She carried a warmth and steadiness that wrapped around everyone she welcomed into her life, and once she welcomed you, you belonged, fully, immediately, and without condition. Ruth passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2026, from complications of sarcoma surrounded by family.
Ruth was born on Nov. 30, 1936, at home in Homer, Ill., to Herman Friedrich Hansen Rohl and Inas Lucille Jones Rohl. She grew up on her family’s 160-acre farm near Allerton with her brothers, James and Phillip, learning early the strength, resilience and work ethic that would define her entire life. She attended country school, graduated from ABL High School in 1955, and began her studies in Home Economics at the University of Illinois before ultimately completing her Bachelor of Science at the University of Washington. Ruth went on to become a registered dietitian, serving in hospitals and nursing facilities for many years before shifting into real estate, where she worked until her retirement in 2023.
Ruth lived with a quiet but unmistakable strength. She faced adversity the same way she faced everything else, with humor, grace, and the unshakeable belief that things always work out. She was patriotic, deeply committed to service, and proud of her work with the VFW. She served as Department President for the State of Washington from 1995–1996 and as Emblem State President from 1996–1997. Her dedication was matched only by her kindness, her generosity, and the way she made every room feel lighter just by being in it.
She enjoyed crocheting, skiing, crafts, flying, square dancing, genealogy, ice skating and traveling, but more than anything, she loved her family. She was the center of it, the steady hand, the warm heart, the quiet strength everyone leaned on. Her shoes are impossible to fill. Her example is one we should all strive to follow, knowing full well we will fall short, because she set the bar that high.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Herman Friedrich Hansen Rohl and Inas Lucille Jones Rohl; her husband, Wade Arnold Herren; and her brothers, James Rohl and Philip Rohl. She is survived by Timothy Wise, Valerie Vaclavik, Daniel Wise (Kathey), Michelle Caron (Kevin), Shelly Barone (John); grandchildren, Jason Radloff (Leah), Jill Foster (Stephen), Amy Vaclavik, Beth Wise, Kevin Wise (Mackenzie), Kyle Archer (Sandy), Kory Archer (Kelsea), Keira Lambright (True); and 13 great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose legacy of kindness, strength, humor, and unwavering love will continue to live on through every person she touched.
A celebration of her life was held on March 20 at Atonement Lutheran Church, 6905 172nd St NE, Arlington, WA 98223.
Memorial donations may be made to the VFW National Home or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
